Crew Weight and Fore-Aft Trim in Chop — RS21 and Oh! (Olson 30)


The Three Dimensions of Weight Placement

Crew weight works in three independent dimensions. All three matter in chop.

The Physics — Why Fore-Aft Trim Matters in Chop

A boat pitches around a point near amidships. The key variables are:

1. Pitching moment of inertia Weight concentrated near the centre of the boat produces less pitching amplitude — less swing, shallower dive, faster recovery. Weight at the ends (bow or stern) acts like a pendulum weight and makes pitching worse. Concentrate crew centrally, not spread to the ends.

2. Bow lift Weight aft raises the bow relative to its flat-water trim angle. A bow that sits slightly higher rides over chop rather than burying into it. A buried bow creates drag, kills speed, and produces the hobby-horse pitch cycle that is hard to recover from.

3. Aft volume The aft sections of most racing keelboats carry more buoyancy than the forward sections. Moving weight aft engages this volume, increasing the hull’s resistance to pitching. It provides a stabilising effect.

Two Regimes — Light Air Chop vs Medium-Heavy Air Chop

These are different problems requiring different solutions.

Light air + chop (below ~8 kts)

The problem is sail stall — the boat pitches fast enough to detach airflow from the sails. The solution is to slow the pitch frequency by spreading crew slightly, which increases pitching moment of inertia and slows the oscillation. Counterintuitive, but correct.

  • Spread crew slightly fore-aft vs their normal position
  • Keep weight LOW (reduces amplitude)
  • Weight slightly forward — boosts power for the light air mode

This regime is not the focus of today’s conditions.

Medium-heavy air + chop (8–15 kts) — the primary scenario

Sail flow is maintained. The problem is pitch amplitude, bow burying, and the speed cost of each chop impact. The solution is:

  1. Concentrate crew together — reduces pitching moment of inertia
  2. Move slightly aft vs. light-air position — lifts bow, engages aft volume
  3. Keep weight low — reduces pitching amplitude

How Far Aft? The Trade-Off

Moving weight aft is not free. There are costs:

The correct amount is a moderate shift from light-air position — not a move to the stern. The aft sections of the boat handle the extra load; the forward sections lift enough to clear chop without dragging the stern.

The J/70 North Sails guide is the closest published reference for an RS21-type sportboat. The J/70 (LOA 6.93m, ~680kg, narrow fin keel, asymmetric spinnaker) is directly comparable to the RS21 — North Sails produces detailed class guides that transfer well. Specific crew position shift for big chop, from the J/70 Upwind Tips for Big Breeze and Chop guide:

The helm moves last and least — they need sight lines and steering leverage.


Athwartships — Hiking and Heel

Rule: flat boat in chop.

Heel in chop is doubly expensive:

  • Heeled hull creates weather helm → requires rudder correction → rudder drag
  • In chop, the boat is already generating the maximum helm load from wave impacts — adding heel-induced weather helm on top is a significant speed killer

RS21: No formal hiking. Crew sits on the side deck or cockpit coaming. Active weight movement athwartships as puffs hit is critical. The RS21 rewards keeping flat — “it has a fine groove, and when you’re in it, you know it” (Sailing World RS21 review). Slight weather heel is noted as fast in light air; flat or dead flat in 8–15 knot chop. J/70 comparison: The J/70 targets 14–17° heel in medium-heavy air chop with a “huge cliff” past 20° (North Sails J/70 guide) — the RS21’s equivalent is dead flat to 1–2° weather heel, same principle.

Oh! (ULDB): Five to six crew hiking. The hiking crew must respond quickly to puffs — especially in chop where the boat heels suddenly when a wave provides lateral resistance and a puff hits simultaneously. Keep the rail up. In heavy chop at the upper end of the range, proactive hiking (moving to the rail before the puff) prevents the lurch that produces a big rudder correction.


Vertical Position — Low Weight in Chop

The further weight is above the waterline, the more it amplifies pitching.

In practice:

  • Crew should not be standing or perching high on the rail when unnecessary
  • In chop, lying or sitting low on the deck beats sitting up on the coaming
  • RS21: the side deck position is already reasonably low — don’t add unnecessary height
  • Oh!: hiking crew are necessarily elevated — this is unavoidable for heel control, but crew not actively hiking should be down on the deck not up on the cabin

Remove dead weight from the bow before racing in chop. Every kilogram of gear on the foredeck amplifies pitching. Loose sails, bags, anchors, lines — anything stowed forward that can be moved midship or aft should be.

On-water cue — watch the bow knuckle: The knuckle (the lower part of the bow where it meets the waterline) is a reliable indicator of correct fore-aft trim. When sailing in waves, the knuckle should be out of the water roughly 50% of the time. Constantly submerged = too much bow weight. Never touching = weight too far aft. The Dynamic Element — Puffs and Lulls

Weight placement in chop is not a fixed setting — it responds to the wind cycle.

The speed of this movement matters on the RS21. The boat reacts quickly — the crew weight shift needs to anticipate the puff, not follow it. On Oh!, the larger mass means the movement is less frantic but the principle is the same.


Boat-Specific Application

RS21 (Sportboat) — Crew Weight in Chop

  • Normal upwind position (flat water, medium air): crew grouped on hiking pad / side deck, roughly midship
  • Chop adjustment: move that group slightly aft — bow person steps back from their light-air position; they are not on the foredeck
  • No bow person forward in chop unless there is an immediate task
  • Dynamic: move aft in puffs, forward in lulls — the RS21 tuning guide makes this explicit
  • Flat boat always — no unnecessary heel, hike in puffs even without formal hiking straps
  • Weight low — sit on the deck, not perched up
  • The boat is “very weight and rig responsive” (RS21 Official Tuning Guide) — small movements matter

RS21 chop penalty for getting it wrong: bow buries, hobby-horses, speed loss is immediate and severe on a 480 kg hull.

Oh! (ULDB) — Crew Weight in Chop

  • Normal upwind position (flat water): crew distributed from just forward of shrouds aft — some crew forward trim is normal in lighter air
  • Chop adjustment: nobody forward of the shrouds in chop; all crew midship to aft of midship
  • No gear on the foredeck in any chop condition
  • Hiking crew respond early to puffs — proactive, not reactive
  • Helm weight — Steve typically aft of traveler; this is already a good chop position; resist the urge to lean forward when pointing
  • Oh! is less reactive than the RS21 to individual crew movements — but the cumulative effect of a crew forward-heavy in chop is visible over a full upwind leg

Oh! specific lesson (Waupoos Wabbit 2023): the cost of bow-heavy in chop is confirmed in race notes. Remove the headsail bag from the foredeck before any upwind leg in chop.

Relationship to Wave Steering Note

Crew weight and upwind wave technique are related but distinct:

  • The wave steering note (260523 RS21 Upwind Wave Steering.md) addresses helm and sail trim response to waves
  • This note addresses crew positioning as the underlying trim platform
  • Correct crew weight is the foundation — it reduces the size of helm and trim corrections needed, which is the goal on both boats

A well-trimmed boat (crew in the right place, boat flat, bow light) handles most 1’–2’ chop without large helm inputs. Crew weight is upstream of the wave steering technique.


On-Water Cue: Watch the Bow Knuckle

A practical visual guide to fore-aft trim from Sailing World:

“When sailing in waves, the knuckle should be out of the water 50 percent of the time. In lighter winds, it should be in the water 90 percent of the time. In bigger breeze, it should be out of the water 90 percent of the time. If your boat has a fine-entry bow, have the forwardmost crew monitor how the knuckle meets the water and adjust crew positioning accordingly — you’d be surprised how shifting one crewmember a few inches either way can make a big difference.” — Sailing World, How to Balance Weight Placement

The “knuckle” is the lower forward section of the bow where the hull transitions to the waterline. If it is buried in the water consistently in chop, move crew aft. This is a real-time, on-water indicator that requires no instruments.
