1. What is confirmed and what is not

Read this first. Confirmed rows are verified against a primary source. Open rows are still open — either not yet published or only available to registered entrants. Status last checked: 11 Sept 2026.

StatusItemDetail
ConfirmedDates: Sat 3 – Sun 4 October 2026Listed on the RS21 Canadian Class Association 2026 calendar as the “Fourth Annual RS21 Canadian Championship at BBYC”.
ConfirmedHost: Bedford Basin Yacht Club377 Shore Drive, Bedford NS B4A 2C7 · (902) 835-3729 · Admin@bbyc.ca. Note the town is Bedford, not Halifax proper — it sits at the head of Bedford Basin, ~20 min north of downtown.
ConfirmedFormatThe RS21 Nationals run inside BBYC’s One Design Fall Regatta (Clubspot event page). In 2025 that was a 42-boat, five-class regatta; the RS21s were the biggest fleet with 12 boats.
Not yet posted2026 Notice of Race and Sailing InstructionsAs of 11 Sept, no NOR/SI is publicly visible. The class site’s link for this event currently points to a Facebook video, not a document. BBYC’s site is a Clubspot build, so documents typically appear on the event page above once registration opens. Action: email Admin@bbyc.ca and ask for the NOR, SIs, entry link and fee.
Not confirmedFriday practice / measurement day (2 Oct)Nothing published. Ask the club whether the RC will be on the water Friday, whether the crane and yard are open for Friday launching, and the earliest time boats can be dropped.
Not confirmedRace start timesIn 2025 the Sailwave results show all RS21 National races logged with an 11:00 start time (both days). Treat 11:00 first warning as the working assumption until the 2026 SI says otherwise.
Ask the RCCourse area and marksClub racing documents are behind the Clubspot member login. Expect windward-leeward on RC-laid inflatables in the north/west basin off Bedford; confirm permanent-mark use and any exclusion zones (see Water & chart section).

2. RS21-specific notes

This is what matters most for the fleet. Facts here come from the 2025 event reports on RS Sailing, Boating Industry Canada and Sailing in Canada.

2025 in one paragraph (what to expect)

  • 12 boats, 4–5 Oct 2025. Seven local BBYC boats; the rest from Kingston YC, Queen’s Sailing Team and Dal Sailing. Five boats trailered ~1,500 km from Kingston.
  • Winner: CAN 318 (Peter Van Rossem / Josh Wilby / Geo Jackson, KYC) by one point over CAN 316 (Thomas Elia / Mansell Styles / Samantha Mastel-Marr / Jack Warner, KYC). Third place was decided on a tie-break.
  • Regatta chair Matt Haley described day one as building breeze with planing conditions; racing was “tight and tactical”. Plan for a full-crew-weight day and a light day.
  • Class president: Andrew Boswell (RS21 Canadian Class Association). Useful contact for fleet-specific questions and boat stacking/logistics.
  • Full 2025 results: Sailwave — RS21 National Championships 2025 & BBYC End-of-Year.

Questions to send the club now (copy/paste)

  • NOR / SI / entry link and fee; is the RS21 Nationals a separate entry from the Fall OD Regatta?
  • Friday 2 Oct: yard access hours, crane operator availability, practice-race intention.
  • Launch method for RS21s (crane vs. ramp), keel-fitting area, trailer parking for the weekend, overnight berthing for visiting boats (slip vs. mooring vs. raft).
  • Number of races scheduled per day, time limit, last warning Sunday, drop-race rule.
  • Course area, RC VHF channel, whether permanent marks are used.
  • Social programme (Saturday dinner, prize-giving time Sunday) so you can plan the drive home.

3. Working schedule

Everything below except the dates is an assumption built on the 2025 pattern. It will be replaced with the official schedule as soon as the NOR/SI are released.

DayWorking planStatus
Fri 2 OctArrive, launch, fit keels, rig, tune-up sail. Registration/check-in if offered. Sunset ≈ 18:45 ADT, so aim to be launched by early afternoon.Unconfirmed
Sat 3 OctSkippers’ briefing (typically 09:00–10:00). First warning 11:00 (2025 pattern). Multiple W/L races. Social/dinner at the club.Start time unconfirmed
Sun 4 OctFirst warning 11:00 (2025 pattern). Usually an earlier last-warning cut-off. Prize-giving, haul-out, de-rig.Unconfirmed

Local time is Atlantic Daylight Time (UTC−3) — one hour ahead of Ontario. Sunrise 3 Oct ≈ 07:15, sunset ≈ 18:45 ADT (approximate; check sunrise/sunset table).

Same-week context

  • RNSYS One Design Regatta, 27–28 Sept 2026 (Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Halifax) — the weekend before. Some Maritime RS21 crews will race both; a possible tune-up if the team arrives early.
  • RS21 World Championship, Yacht Club de Cannes, 28–31 Oct 2026.

4. Bedford Basin Yacht Club — the venue

The source page includes a hand-drawn schematic chartlet of Bedford Basin (tap to open the full CHS 4201 chart). At a glance: BBYC sits at the very head of the basin; racing is normally in the northern water off the club, with the commercial anchorage and the Narrows to the south. Open the club in Google Maps · Satellite view of the basin.

Launch and haul-out: the club crane

BBYC launches and hauls with its club crane. The club lists launch and haul, dry-sailing, storage and mast raising/lowering as services run “through the use of the club crane” (Atlantic Boating News, 2022). Crane capacity, operating hours and who runs it on regatta weekend are not published — confirm with the club whether visiting RS21s launch by crane or by ramp, when the operator is available on Friday and Sunday, and where keels are fitted. The yard manager (Chris, per Google reviews) is the person to ask.

Facility facts

  • Founded 1954; ~150 family memberships; EZ Dock floating marina installed 2014 and expanded several times; 44 slips, remainder dry-sailed or on moorings.
  • Services listed by the club: launch and haul, storage, mast raising/lowering, bottom cleaning, fuel (gas and diesel), tender service, dry-sail via crane.
  • Clubhouse main floor renovated recently; deck with awning enclosure so the dining room extends outside in bad weather. Bar and food service on regatta weekends.
  • Home fleets: RS21, J/105, Farr 30, Niagara 26, Melges 24, J/24. Tuesday-evening OD racing through the season.
  • Club’s own pages: bbyc.ca · Racing · Race Team 2026 · Facebook.

5. Water, tides, current and the chart

Short version for tacticians: Bedford Basin is an enclosed, deep basin (~8 km × 5 km) fed through the Narrows. Tidal range at the Bedford Institute gauge is modest — about 1.7–2.0 m at springs, roughly 1.0–1.3 m at neaps — and current inside the basin proper is weak and generally not a course-shaping factor. Tide matters far more at the crane, ramp and dock (depth and step-down at low water) than it does on the race course. Wind, land effects and commercial traffic will decide races, not tide.

Tide station and predictions

The official Canadian Hydrographic Service station is Bedford Institute (00491), 3 km south of the club at the mouth of the basin. Use it for the race weekend; the DFO page lets you pick any start date and gives hourly heights. Tides here are semi-diurnal: two highs and two lows a day, roughly 6 h 12 min apart, advancing ~50 min per day.

Race weekend, 2–4 OctFalls near last-quarter moon, i.e. close to neaps. Expect a smaller range (≈1.0–1.3 m) and lows that are not extreme. Exact times to be added here once inside the DFO 7-day window (from ~26 Sept).

Chart and navigation

  • The chart to carry: CHS 4201 Halifax Harbour: Bedford Basin, 1:10,000 — the whole racing area on one sheet. View CHS 4201 online (free zoomable viewer) · buy print-on-demand from TrakMaps or Landfall, or off the shelf at The Yacht Shop / The Binnacle.
  • The approach sheet: CHS 4202 Point Pleasant to Bedford Basin covers the Narrows and the bridges if anyone sails in from the harbour. GoTrekkers 4202.
  • Buoys and lights on a free web chart: OpenSeaMap centred on the basin shows the charted aids. For Navionics users, open the app and search “Bedford Basin Yacht Club” — its web viewer has no shareable coordinate link.
  • Layout: BBYC is at the very north end (Bedford). The basin opens south through the Narrows under the MacKay and Macdonald bridges to Halifax Harbour. Bedford Institute of Oceanography and the Narrows are at the south-east; Burnside industrial park, Wrights Cove gypsum terminal and Dartmouth YC line the east shore; Fairview Cove container terminal is on the west shore near the south end; rail lines run the length of the west shore.
  • Traffic to respect: the basin is a working anchorage — bulk carriers and naval vessels anchor and transit, and container ships turn for Fairview Cove. Expect the SI to contain a “commercial vessels shall not be impeded” clause; give ships and tugs a wide berth regardless.
  • Racing marks: BBYC races primarily on RC-laid inflatable marks in the northern basin off the club (you can see the start area from the clubhouse deck). Whether the club also uses fixed/permanent marks for this regatta is not published — confirm at the briefing.
  • Local wind pattern (general): October brings frontal passages. Ahead of fronts: southerly/south-westerly funnelling up the harbour; behind fronts: brisk, gusty north-westerlies off the land with big shifts on the west shore. Sea-breeze influence is weak by October. Water temperature ~12–14 °C; dress for cold spray.

Bookmark these. Two model views are better than one; if they disagree, expect the shiftier outcome.

Nearest reporting station is Halifax Stanfield (CYHZ), 20 km inland — it over-reads the land breeze relative to the basin. Bedford Institute’s own met data is not public in real time.

7. Sailmakers, riggers and chandleries

All within 15–35 minutes of BBYC. Hours are as listed on Google at time of writing — phone ahead on a regatta weekend, and note that the sail lofts are closed Saturday and Sunday, so any repair has to be booked for Friday.

8. Where to stay & where to eat

Where to stay

Bedford itself has few hotels; the cluster is at Larry Uteck / Kearney Lake Road (Hwy 102 exit 2), 8–10 minutes from the club, which is also the natural approach from the airport and from Ontario. Book early — early October is peak leaf-season in Nova Scotia.

Also worth asking the club: BBYC members have historically billeted visiting crews for the Nationals. Ask Admin@bbyc.ca or the class association.

Where to eat

The club bar and kitchen run on regatta weekends. Outside the club, all of these are 3–10 minutes by car.

11. Travelling from Ontario

Driving with the boats

  • Distance: Kingston → Bedford ≈ 1,500 km; Picton → Bedford ≈ 1,550 km. Route: 401 E → A-20 through Québec → Trans-Canada (Hwy 2) through New Brunswick → Hwy 104 into Nova Scotia → Hwy 102 south to Bedford (exit 4 or 2). Realistically 16–17 h of driving with trailers; most crews overnight around Rivière-du-Loup or Fredericton/Moncton.
  • Time zone: you lose an hour crossing into New Brunswick (Atlantic time).
  • Tolls: Cobequid Pass on Hwy 104 (NS) is a toll road — cash/card at the plaza. Highway 30/A-20 in Québec is toll-free on the direct route.
  • Trailer notes: RS21s stack for transport (flat deck, removable keel) — that is how the 2025 Kingston contingent moved five boats. Confirm trailer parking at BBYC; the yard is compact and it is a residential street (Shore Drive).
  • Road conditions, live: Ontario 511 · Québec 511 · New Brunswick 511 · Nova Scotia 511. Check NS 511 for Hwy 102/Bedford Highway construction the week of the event — Halifax’s Bedford Highway and Windsor Street exchange have had rolling roadworks in 2025–26.
  • Fuel/last big stop before Bedford: Truro (Hwy 102/104 junction), ~50 min out.

Flying

  • Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) is ~20 min from BBYC via Hwy 102 — Bedford is on the airport side of the city, which is convenient. Direct flights from Toronto (Air Canada, WestJet, Porter), Ottawa and Montréal. Rental cars at the terminal.

Local practicalities

  • Nearest grocery/hardware: Sunnyside Mall and Bedford Place Mall on Bedford Highway (Sobeys, Canadian Tire ~5 min). Liquor: NSLC on Bedford Highway.
  • Nearest hospital ER: QEII Health Sciences Centre (Halifax) or Cobequid Community Health Centre (Lower Sackville, ~10 min, urgent care hours only).
  • Cell coverage on the basin is solid (all three carriers).
  • Ice: the club bar, or grocery stores above.
